The National Planning Policy Guidance requires anyone applying for planning permission to consider where their rainwater will go, with soakaways being the preferred option if they will work.

A well designed soakaway will work for the life of the property it serves with the minimum of maintenance, whereas a poorly designed one will cause flooding very soon after it is built.
